Events
The City of Rocks Institute sponsors a variety of special events throughout the year that are designed to showcase the beauty of the City of Rocks Park and raise much-needed funds for our work in educating visitors & conserving this special place.
Birding Big Day Blitz
Expert and amateur birders alike will gather at the visitor center to form teams (or join one team depending on the number of participants) to inventory as many bird species as possible within a 24-hour period. Teams will be given checklists, map of the checklist area, rules and ethics of birding. If more than one team is created, that team will elect a team captain. Team members should be at least 13 years old. There is no fee, but preregistration is required by contacting Wallace Keck, the event coordinator: [email protected], 208-312-2796. The purposes of the event include providing natural resources data to public land managers, to monitor from year to year the presence and health of birds in the northern Basin and Range, and to bring attention to the mission and accomplishments of City of Rocks National Reserve and City of Rocks Institute.
